Approximately nine percent of all babies born in the United States will receive some care in a neonatal intensive care unit, whether due to prematurity (babies born at 37 weeks and under) or a serious medical condition. Wolfson Children's Hospital is home to the area's highest-level Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Babies born prematurely at facilities in the area can be transferred to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Wolfson by ground ambulance, Kids Kare or Life Flight helicopter, which is specially equipped for a newborn's special needs.
